WATER TAXI CAPTAIN
The role at a glance
Pay: $25 to $30+ per hour plus tips, based on experience and qualifications
Hours: 40+ per week
Schedule: Days, evenings, weekends, and long weekends. 8 to 10 hour shifts.
Season: May 1 to October 31
About the role
The Captain performs daily vessel operations for Art & Water Taxi's seasonal water taxi business on the Toronto waterfront. As Master of the vessel under law, the Captain is responsible for safe operations and represents Art & Water Taxi to every passenger, always conducting themselves in a professional and friendly manner.
Core duties include vessel operations, managing passenger flow, assisting passengers in distress, and securing Art & Water Taxi property.
What you'll do
Carry out all vessel operations safely, appropriately, and cost-effectively, in line with Art & Water Taxi's Vessel Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
Embark and disembark passengers and cargo when no dock staff are present, including at island-side dock locations
Participate in all training, including regularly scheduled emergency drills and any additional training required by management
Maintain a tidy, well-organised vessel
Ensure the security of all Art & Water Taxi property
Who you'll report to
The Captain reports to the Operations Manager. Day-to-day work is supervised by the Dockmaster or Manager-on-Duty on shift.
What we're looking for
Proven work experience as a small commercial vessel Captain or in a similar role
Polite and considerate demeanour, with the ability to speak with authority when required
Strong team player
Excellent communication skills in English (proficiency in other languages is an asset)
Reliable timekeeping
Initiative and accountability
Able to lift 45 lbs (21 kg)
Able to sit and stand for long periods
Able to work in all weather conditions
Required certifications (minimum standard):
Transport Canada Small Commercial Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)
Transport Canada Small Domestic Vessel - Basic Safety (SDV-BS)
Industry Canada Restricted Operator's Certificate - Marine (ROC-M)
Marine Basic First Aid (including CPR)
